Traffic Department
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Traffic Department is primarily responsible for maintaining
traffic signs, pavement markings, city owned streetlights, traffic
control for roadway maintenance, new projects, and special events.
We operate under the guidelines of the Federal Manual of Traffic
Control Devices also know as the M.U.T.C.D., the city has adopted
this manual and we are required to be certified at a minimum of
"Level 1 Signs and Markings Specialist" by the International
Municipal Signal Association.
There are approximately one hundred miles of streets and roadways
that must have centerlines striped and curbs painted, plus intersections
signed and marked with crosswalks and stop bars; we do this annually.
In the city there are over 300 crosswalks using 500 gallons of
paint annually, over 2,000 signs that need maintained and approximately
300 city owned luminaries that also must be maintained.
Operational and Preventive Maintenance activities include:
" Installation replacement of traffic control signs and street
signs as needed-118 in the last ten months.
" Removal of sight obstruction from all street signs by trimming
tree limbs and foliage as needed.
" Installation and maintenance of pavement markings- 300 Crosswalks
and approx. 100 miles of striping-we do this every year.
" Installation and maintenance of city owned streetlights-200
repaired or replaced in the last ten months. Inspect system status
January, April, July and October each year.
" Install traffic control signs, cones, and barricades for
special events, major accidents and winter storm events.
" Roadside vegetation control by use of herbicides and mowing-18
miles. 347 hours
Train Depot Building Maintenance
Structural- Paint over/Remove Graffiti in Men's' Rm. (Upstairs)
As needed- 2 hours minimum.
Paint eaves as needed-June- 40 hours
Paint Gables as needed 40 hours
Moss/Vegetation Control on brick deck Annually-June- 4 hours
Clean Gutters Annually-Sept. 8 hours
In addition to the aforementioned primary responsibilities we also
maintain all city owned buildings which include the Train Depot
(building, grounds and irrigation systems), , Administration Office
Building, Finance and Utility Building, Engineering/Police Building,
Library and Public Works facility.
Maintenance duties include plumbing, electrical and structural repairs.
We also provide assistance to any department in need of furniture,
equipment or material delivery or relocation.
Presently there are two full-time employees in the Traffic Department.
In the summer months I also hire two part-time college students
for ten-week periods.
